DESCRIPTION: : This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings concerning information and news of the Utahns involved in the Spanish American War. It contains articles on the preparations for, involvement in, and conclusions and repercussions of the war as pertaining to Utah soldiers and citizens. It was compiled by the governor’s office at the time as a scrapbook of current events.

The articles in the beginning of the scrapbook tell of mobilization and preparations for the war. The volunteering of Utah soldiers is heavily reported on, informing Utah citizens of the quotas needed from each county of the state. They also tell of the departure of the soldiers from Salt Lake City and their journey to Cuba, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico.

There are many articles on the actual war and the reports of the involvement of Utahns. The articles tell of heroic actions, daily life, and deaths of Utah soldiers fighting in the infantry, artillery and cavalry. They tell of the triumph of the soldiers in cities such as Manila and Santiago.

The scrapbook contains articles on the homecoming of the soldiers and how their sacrifice has honored not only themselves, but the citizens of Utah as well.

ARRANGEMENT: Arrangement is roughly chronological

RELATED RECORDS: Series 235, Governor Wells' CORRESPONDENCE, includes letters pertaining to Utah troops involved in the war. Other series provide individual service data on Utahns: Series 10318, Spanish American War service cards; Series 983, Spanish American War medals; Series 20843, Spanish American War ante-muster pay records; Series 24048, Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection service cards; Series 10320, Spanish American War and Philippine Insurrection muster rolls.
