Series 83898
WASHINGTON COUNTY (UTAH). COUNTY RECORDER [1325]PLAT MAPS, 1962-ongoing6 microfilm reels
A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: Each Utah county recorder is responsible to prepare and keep current plat maps for all land within the county (Utah Code, Annotated, 1953, 17-21-21). These maps delineate property boundaries and show current property ownership. The Washington County recorder has drawn a separate map for each section within each township, and where detail required, separate maps for portions of sections and community blocks. More recent plat maps have been further broken down by community blocks and subdivisions. This series contains three complete sets of ownership plats. The first, called Old Ownership Plats, is not dated, but is calculated to reflect ownership as of 1962. The second is assumed to be current as of microfilming in 1974, and likewise the third in 1989. The 1974 and 1989 maps indicate the book and page number where a deed of acquisition was recorded. The 1989 maps include street names but not street addresses.
ARRANGEMENT: Plat maps are arranged by location. Washington County is organized into six-mile-square townships, identified by distance and direction from the Salt Lake base line and meridian. Townships are identified in terms of range and township, with range being distance west of the Salt Lake meridian, and township being the distance south of the base line. Each township is divided into 36 sections. Washington County occupies townships 37-43 south, at a range of 10 to 20 west of the Salt Lake meridian. Plat maps are arranged numerically by range, thereunder, numerically by township, and thereunder numerically by section number.
In the 1974 plats the recorder separated plats for the city of Saint George and put them at the beginning. He created separate maps for each block, arranging them sequentially according to plat letter, and thereunder numerically by block number. Thereafter, he began with range 10 and presented each section in sequence.
In the 1989 plats the recorder also began with Saint George, but then separated out several additional communities, arranging them in like manner according to plat then block number. Following these communities, he created a plat map for each subdivision and arranged these alphabetically. He then followed with plats for each section, beginning with range 10 and continuing to range 19.
RESEARCH NOTE: Many of the older ownership plats are faded and difficult to read, and part of range 13 was filmed twice.
RELATED RECORDS: Abstracts, which chronologically document property ownership are recorded in ABSTRACTS (SECTIONAL LAND), series 16432; ABSTRACTS (TOWNS), series 23555; and ABSTRACTS (SAINT GEORGE), series 23554. They are also arranged according to section, township, and range, or block and plat number. ABSTRACTS (SUBDIVISIONS), series 23731, document ownership history for subdivisions. OFFICIAL MAPS, series 23691, contain additional maps of Washington County cities and subdivisions. Also, LEO SNOW'S MAPS, series 23581, contain a wide variety of miscellaneous maps including additional plat maps and some original town surveys. Most deeds transferring ownership were recorded in OFFICIAL RECORDS, series 7067, however some were recorded in earlier deed books.
FINDING AIDS: The 1974 plat maps contain indexes at the beginning of each range identifying the location of surveys, subdivisions, town sites, developments, and etc. within that range. The 1989 filming includes a survey map at the beginning of each community, which identifies the location of plats and blocks. Subdivision plats in the 1989 plats include the exact location of each subdivision in terms of township and range.
PROCESSING NOTE: Ownership plat maps were microfilmed by Utah State Archives in April 1974 and March 1989 and were processed by Rosemary Cundiff in June 2001. Utah State Archives holds additional unprocessed plats microfilmed in 1992.
PREFERRED CITATION: Cite the Utah State Archives and Records Service, the creating agency name, the series title, and the series number.
GAPS: Range 20 is missing from the 1989 filming.
