Series 385
SECRETARY OF STATE [603]
RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS INCORPORATION RECORD BOOK, 1901-1918
1 microfilm reel
DESCRIPTION: This record book records
copies of the articles of incorporation for churches and religious societies.
In 1901, the Legislature enacted a law (LAWS OF UTAH, series 83155: ch. 80,
1901) providing for the incorporation of churches and religious societies to
acquire, hold and dispose of property. Under the terms of the law, "any
person....in whom shall be vested the legal title to the property of such
church or religious society, may make and subscribe written articles of
incorporation in duplicate, and acknowledge the same before some officer
authorized to take acknowledgments, and file one of such articles in the office
of the Secretary of State and retain possession of the other."
The pre-printed forms in this volume apply only to the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints, and constitute almost the entire volume, although
there are typed forms for Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Presbyterian churches
toward the end of the book. The forms state that the church desires to
incorporate for the purpose of handling their property and gives blanks for the
county, name of the corporation, purpose, estimated value of property currently
held, title of the person making the articles of incorporation, wording on the
corporate seal, signature of the authorized person, and signatures and copy of
the notary public's statement.
ARRANGEMENT: Entries are arranged
chronologically by date of filing.
