Series 379

TERRITORIAL SECRETARY [603]

FIRE INSURANCE COMPANIES CERTIFICATE RECORD BOOK, 1884-1888
1 reel microfilm

DESCRIPTION: This record book contains copies of certificates authorizing fire insurance companies or agents to do business in Utah. In order to transact business, the agent was to file a statement with the Secretary of the Territory showing company name, amount of capital, assets and liabilities, agent name, receipts and expenditures, etc. Possessing sufficient paid-up capital was mandatory. The statement had to be renewed annually. Following the filing of such a statement, the territorial secretary issued the company or agent a certificate of authority allowing the company or agent to transact business.

Each certificate consists of a preprinted form stating that a statement had been filed, that the company appeared possessed of sufficient paid up capital, and that therefore it was authorized to do business in the territory. Blanks are provided for the name of the agent, the insurance company name, and the date and signature of the territorial secretary.

ARRANGEMENT: Entries are chronological.

RELATED RECORDS: The last section of the territorial INCORPORATION REGISTER, Series 378, also notes the name and filing date for fire insurance companies from 1880-1896. An INSURANCE COMPANIES LIST, Series 6222, includes fire insurance companies from 1887-1890.

FINDING AIDS: An alphabetical index to companies provides the page number of the certificate and the name of the agent.

PROCESSING NOTE: Archivally processed by A.C. Cone, 1990. Microfilmed, with the paper copy discarded, in 1991.
