CRIMINAL REGISTERS OF ACTIONS, 1896-[ongoing]

DESCRIPTION: This series documents the individual criminal cases tried by the Third District Court. Actions taken in each case are recorded on separate documents and then filed together to become the case file. As these documents enter the case file they are recorded in the Criminal Registers of Actions on a page dedicated to each individual case file. Registers of Actions thus function as a chronological list of the actions taken in each criminal case.

A register of actions normally contains the following: party names, defendant's attorney's name, criminal charge, and a listing of actions. Actions recorded may include the filing of: transcripts on appeal from a lower court, indictment, charges, arraignment, plea, warrants, bail bonds, attorney's motions, court orders, subpoena, verdict, and sentence.

ARRANGEMENT: The series is arranged numerically by case number with entries thereunder chronologically by date filed, with spans of cases gathered together into volumes. While individual cases generally use no more than one page each, occasional cases will require more space. Often cases may be continued onto blank sections on pages belonging to other case files, or may be continued onto blank pages at the end of the volume.

RELATED RECORDS: Series 1471, CRIMINAL CASE FILES, 1896-[ongoing], contain criminal cases listed in these registers. Series 1650, MINUTE BOOKS, 1896-1967, contain information elaborating on the proceedings of these cases. Series 12376, CRIMINAL CASE FILES (SEALED AND EXPUNGED) 1896-1970, contain those cases sealed and expunged by the court and removed from the case files during microfilming. Series 13126, CRIMINAL CASE FILES AND REGISTERS OF ACTION INDEXES, contains a surname index to these cases from 1916-1975. Series 22664 is the CRIMINAL REGISTERS OF ACTIONS from the territorial Third District Court for this county and others.

FINDING AIDS: While volumes dating between 1896 and 1915 contain indexes to the names of the defendants and the case numbers found within that volume, an electronic index has been created that contains all cases from this time frame. Series 13126, CRIMINAL CASE FILES AND REGISTERS OF ACTION INDEXES, indexes the series after 1915.

CUSTODY HISTORY: The Criminal Registers of Action were maintained by the Salt Lake County Clerk with periodic transfers to the State Archives beginning February 2, 1968.

PROCESSING NOTE: This is a continuing series that was originally scheduled as permanent in 1983. This series was processed by Kenneth R. Williams in March of 1994 and microfilmed in May of 1994. The original records were destroyed following microfilming. In February 1999, the series inventory was updated by David Clark after more microfilming was completed, records being located and additional records transferred from the court. Another update followed in August 2001 after additional filming.

PREFERRED CITATION: Cite the Utah State Archives and Records Service, the creating agency name, the series title, and the series number.
