CRIMINAL REQUISITIONS REGISTERS, 1881-1949.

A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: This series contains requisitions, which are formal requests sent by the Governor of Utah to the governors of other states, requesting them to arrest and extradite those accused of committing crimes in Utah. The power to issue a requisition has always been exercised by the Governor's office. As with other "official acts", these were filed and recorded by the Secretary of State; these registers contain this official copy. After 1949, the Secretary's office discontinued recording requisitions in separate registers.
Requests for the extradition of criminals originated at the local level, usually from county attorneys, district courts, justices of the peace or police officials. Requests were often accompanied by court documents or correspondence; and in response, the governor's office issued the formal requisition document, a copy of which is recorded in this series. Information is recorded on standard pre-printed forms. Each form specifies the crime committed, name of criminal, place where suspect might be found, and the name of the officer authorized to receive the fugitive.
ARRANGEMENT: Requisitions are recorded in chronological order in each volume.
RELATED RECORDS: For the territorial period requisitions received from the governors of other states and supporting documentation for both those received and those sent can be found in the TERRITORIAL EXECUTIVE PAPERS, series 241. Warrants for the arrest of criminals received from other states are recorded in the CRIMINAL WARRANT REGISTER, series 305 for the period 188l-1895. The CRIMINAL REQUISITIONS CASE FILES, series 348 contains supporting documentation for cases from the the statehood period. Prior to 1881, requisitions were recorded by the Secretary of State in the EXECUTIVE RECORD BOOKS, series 241.
FINDING AIDS: A separate index is available.
PROCESSING NOTE: Archival processing was completed in 1987 by Val Wilson with microfilming completed in 2005.
