UTAH. DEPT. OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. DIVISION OF TRAVEL DEVELOPMENT [1151]

PUBLICITY PHOTOGRAPHS, 1950-1969.
5.4 cubic feet.

A separate agency history is available.

DESCRIPTION: The Division of Travel Development (previously the Utah Travel Council) photographed the Utah landscape in the 1950s and 1960s to assist in their goal of providing publicity for the state. The division wanted to have a library of still photographs available for their own use, and to assist any individual or agency in promoting recreation and tourism within the state. Photographs in this collection were taken throughout the state, and are primarily scenic views, including many designated tourist spots, recreation sites, and panoramic landscapes. The travel council also photographed recreational activities such as boating and skiing, as well as activities and events they sponsored. This collection includes black and white prints, negatives, and color slides.

ARRANGEMENT: The travel council divided Utah into travel regions for promotional purposes. These regions and the counties they include are:1. Bridgerland (Cache and Rich); 2. Canyonlands (San Juan and Grand); 3. Castle Country (Carbon and Emery); 4. Color Country (Kane, Washington, Beaver, Garfield, and Iron); 5. Dinosaurland (Daggett, Duchesne, and Unitah); 6. Golden Spike Empire (Box Elder, Weber, Davis and Morgan); 7. Mormon Country or Great Salt Lake Country (Tooele and Salt Lake); 8. Mountainland (Summit, Wasatch and Utah); 9. Panoramaland (Juab, Millard, Piute, Wayne, Sevier, and Sanpete). The collection is arranged alphabetically by travel region. Thereunder, photographic prints and negatives are arranged alphabetically by location or event, followed by slides, which are also arranged alphabetically.

RESEARCH NOTE: No attempt has been made to identify the photographer of each image. However, the photographs in this series include the work of the following individuals: David Mann, Ward Roylance, Norman Van Pelt, Parker Hamilton, Al Marion, Dave Nordell, Hal Rumel, Frank Jensen, Fred O. RELATED RECORDS: The Division of Travel Development (Utah Travel Council) reported on division activities and goals in ANNUAL REPORTS, series 2993. The Division of Travel Development carried out a program of advertising and publicity for Utah. They used photographs to illustrate publications, which are included in: PUBLICATIONS, series 2508, which contains a variety of publications both advertising Utah and reporting on travel and tourism in the state; TRAVEL GUIDES, series 2435, which contains succeeding editions of a general travel guide for Utah emphasizing accommodations and things to see and do; and TRAVEL BROCHURES, series 3000, which includes a wide variety of brochures advertising specific points of interest and travel regions.

PROCESSING NOTE: The photographs in this series were originally tossed in a box, but many were marked with the location they were taken and travel region. The photographs were sorted and organized by Sarah Talley. Archival processing was completed by Rosemary Cundiff in July 2001.
