Series 24562
TOOELE COUNTY (UTAH). COUNTY RECORDER [1166]MINING CLAIMS ABSTRACTS, 1891-1978.
4 microfilm reels
A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: As the agent responsible for recording documents pertaining to mining claims, the Tooele County recorder created mining claims abstracts. An abstract is a chronological list of recorded documents relating to a particular claim. These documents might include the notice of location which established original right to the claim, affidavits showing proof of labor required to maintain the claim, and deeds or other documents affecting ownership. Each abstract is headed with the name of the claim and the district in which it was located. Each subsequent entry identifies the kind of document, when and where it was recorded, and names the grantee (buyer) and grantor (seller).
ARRANGEMENT: Abstracts are arranged by claim, and thereunder entries are chronological by date filed. Claims are roughly chronological by date of first activity, although abstracts in Book 2 were entered in alphabetical order.
RESEARCH NOTES: In creating abstracts, the county recorder left a limited amount of space for each claim. When that space was filled, he or she continued on another page, making reference on both pages where the abstract had been continued to and from.
These books were microfilmed with the camera head upside down, and therefore the images are in reverse order on the reel. In order to read the entries in chronological order, a researcher will need to read the microfilm backwards. Some pages are faded and difficult to read. Abstract Book 6 is not labeled on the microfilm, but flows out of the end of Book 5.
RELATED RECORDS: The county recorder created a MINING ABSTRACTS INDEX, series 24177, which provides reference to all claims, and a PATENTED CLAIMS INDEX, series 24564, which provides reference only to patented claims. Referenced documents were recorded primarily in MINING RECORDS, series 6150, and in DEEDS, series 6080, however they were also recorded in various other county recorder's books.
FINDING AIDS: Access to the abstracts is provided by MINING ABSTRACTS INDEX, series 24177, and by PATENTED CLAIMS INDEX, series 24564 (see related records).
PROCESSING NOTE: Tooele County mining records were processed by Rosemary Cundiff in November 2002.
