CIVIL JUDGMENT DOCKETS, 1871-1896.

DESCRIPTION: These judgment dockets function as the court clerk's tracking device for the decision rendered in each civil case. The dockets record the names of judgment debtor and creditor, and frequently the case number; a brief statement regarding the judgment including in whose favor decided and for how much; date of entry; judgment record book and page where the judgment was entered; appeals, if any; notes on the judgment of the appellate court; and notes regarding the satisfaction (payment) of judgment.

These dockets are indexed. Once the docket entry is found, the corresponding entry in the judgment record books also can be located. In addition, with the date and/or case number information in the dockets, the researcher can locate an individual case file or entries in the court minutes. A few entries at the end of the final volume were docketed by the Third District Court in and for Salt Lake County after statehood.

ARRANGEMENT: The series is chronological by filing date.

RESEARCH NOTE: The territorial Third District Court included various Utah counties at different times. See the Historical Jurisdiction Chart for details.

RELATED RECORDS: Series 24337, JUDGMENT DOCKET INDEXES, are plaintiff surname indexes to this series. Series 24336, JUDGMENT RECORD BOOKS, summarizes the proceedings and final judgment of the action taken in many of these cases. Series 9802, CASE FILES, contains the entire case file for many of the cases mentioned in the dockets. Series 1649, TERRITORIAL MINUTE BOOKS, contains information elaborating on the proceedings of many cases listed in this series.

After statehood in 1896, each county in the district kept records separately. The JUDGMENT DOCKETS for the Third District Court in and for Salt Lake County after statehood are Series 1671.

FINDING AIDS: Series 24337, JUDGMENT DOCKET INDEXES, is a plaintiff surname index to this series which provides a page number for entries in these dockets.

CUSTODY HISTORY: The bulk of the judgment records were transferred by the Salt Lake County Clerk, ex-officio district court clerk, to the State Archives February 19, 1968.

PROCESSING NOTE: The judgment dockets were first scheduled to be retained permanently in 1983. At that time it was decided to microfilm and destroy the originals 9 years after their creation. These records were microfilmed in December of 1993 and processed by Kenneth R. Williams as part of the Salt Lake County judgment dockets, series 1671, in January of 1994. This series was created and processed in January 2003 by A.C. Cone when the territorial films were separated and assigned to the appropriate creating territorial court.
