DESCRIPTION: The Tooele County recorder created a general index to mining related documents. This index not only provides reference to notices of location (claims) and mining deeds, but also to mineral certificates, bonds, mortgages, agreements, notices of sale, powers of attorney, mining district by-laws, patents, etc. The first index (Mining Index Book A) provides only the name of a claim and the book and page number where a document was recorded. Thereafter, the index books also identify the type of document and the mining district in which the relevant claim was located. Beginning with Book K, the date filed is also included. Entries made after 1955 include the county recorder's entry number.

ARRANGEMENT: Volumes are roughly chronological. Within each volume, entries are alphabetical by first letter of the claim name and thereunder chronological.

RESEARCH NOTE: The general mining index provides reference by the name of a mining claim only, and not by the names of individuals or companies owning those claims. Since entries in Index Books A-J do not provide dates, approximate dates have been calculated based on the date spans of books referenced.

This series was microfilmed with the camera head upside down, and therefore the images are in reverse order on the reel. In order to read the entries in chronological order, a researcher will need to read the microfilm backwards.

RELATED RECORDS: All entries in Index A reference documents recorded in DEEDS, series 6080. Subsequent volumes provide reference to documents recorded in DEEDS as well as in MINING RECORDS, series 6150. In addition to these primary reference sources, the index refers to documents recorded in MORTGAGES, series 6161; AGREEMENTS AND LEASES, series 84210; and in other county recorder series. After 1955 the Tooele County recorder recorded all mining records in OFFICIAL RECORDS, series 7134. MINING LOCATION NOTICES INDEXES, series 24176, also provide an additional reference to notices of location.
