Series 24150
HERCULES MINING DISTRICT (UTAH). RECORDER [3138]LOCATION NOTICES, 1895-1897.1 microfilm reel
A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: The development of the cyanide process in the early 1890s and the construction of the first commercial cyanide mill in Mercur stimulated mining activity and prompted the organization of several new mining districts in Tooele County. The Hercules Mining District was organized in 1895. The records kept by the Hercules Mining District recorder include only location notices or mining claims. According to federal law, mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration, and locators of the same had exclusive right of possession. Local mining districts managed mining operations and recorded claims. (Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. 17, 1872, chap. 152). Location notices for the Hercules District affirm compliance with federal and local laws. Each location notice names the locator or locators and describes the claim both in terms of dimensions and location. Notices provide a discovery date as well as the date and time recorded and are signed by the district recorder or his deputy.
ARRANGEMENT: Location notices are arranged chronologically.
RELATED RECORDS: The Tooele County recorder recorded notices of location for the Hercules District after 1897. These records as well as a copy of the by-laws for the Hercules District are included in Tooele County MINING RECORDS, series 6150. By-laws begin on page 374 of Book D. The Blue Bell Mining District is in the same area and was organized about the same time. MINING RECORDS for that district are series 24153.
PROCESSING NOTE: Records of the Hercules Mining District were processed by Rosemary Cundiff in August 2002.
