WILLIAMS MINING DISTRICT (UTAH). RECORDER [3125]MINING LOCATION NOTICES, 1895-1896.
1 microfilm reel
A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: The mining location notices book for the Williams District contains a copy of the by-laws for the district, which was organized in December 1895. It also contains notices of location for mining claims recorded in the district from January to June of 1896. For each notice the district recorder reported the names of locators and locating agents, the name of the mining claim, a description of the claim, and dates of location and recording. Location notices were recorded in accordance with federal mining law which specified that mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration, and locators of the same had right of possession (see Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, 1872, vol. XVII, chap. 152). Local mining districts managed mining operations and district recorders kept a record of claims.
ARRANGEMENT: A copy of the Williams Mining District by-laws is followed by location notices, which were recorded in chronological order by date of filing.
RESEARCH NOTE: Location notices for the Williams Mining District were recorded in a book which Mr. Jonathan Williams had used previously as an account book. The beginning of the book lists expenses and identifies them as for Mr. Williams, Mrs. Williams, or mining. The end of the book contains an Indian account and a sheep account.
RELATED RECORDS: Some location notices for the Williams Mining District were recorded by the Monumental Mining District recorder and appear in the records of that district: MINING LOCATION NOTICES, series 24041. After 1897 mining location notices for the Williams District were recorded by the San Juan County recorder in MINING RECORDS, series 84250.
PROCESSING NOTE: The Williams Mining District book was microfilmed by San Juan County in February 2001 and processed by Rosemary Cundiff in January 2002.
