DESCRIPTION: The mining location notices books for the Gabel Mining District contain the placer claims of prospectors searching for wealth in southwestern San Juan County. These claims were filed in accordance with federal mining laws which specified that mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration, and locators of the same had right of possession (see Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, 1872, vol. XVII, chap. 152). For each notice the district recorder reported the names of locators and/or locating agents, the name of the mining claim, a description of the claim, and dates of location and recording. All surviving claims recorded by the Gabel District recorder were recorded between February and September 1893 or in December 1894.

ARRANGEMENT: The mining district recorder filed location notices chronologically.

RELATED RECORDS: The mining district recorder kept a GENERAL INDEX, series 24038, which provides reference to the documents in these books by name of locator. He also created a RECEPTION BOOK, series 24037, which provides a chronological list of records in these books and reference by name of locator to the documents in Book 1. The San Juan County County recorder recorded additional location notices for the Gabel District in MINING RECORDS, series 84250. He later recorded placer petroleum claims for the Gabel District in MINING LOCATION NOTICES (PETROLEUM), series 24000.

FINDING AIDS: In addition to indexes noted as related records, Gabel Mining District Record Book 1 includes an index which provides reference by the name of locator.

PROCESSING NOTE: Gabel Mining District mining location notices were microfilmed by San Juan County in February 2001 and processed by Rosemary Cundiff in January 2002.
