BRADSHAW MINING DISTRICT (UTAH). RECORDER [3204]

MINING RECORDS, 1875-1897.
1 microfilm reel

A separate agency history is available.

DESCRIPTION: The Bradshaw Mining District, organized 1 May 1875 at Bradshaw Springs, was one of several mining districts organized in Beaver County in the 1870s. Bradshaw boundaries included the western slopes of the Mineral Mountains, which are included in Utah's southern-most major mineral belt. Mining in this area prospered throughout the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The Bradshaw District was organized according to established custom and federal law which allowed individuals to claim mineral wealth in the public domain (Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. 17, 1872, chap. 152). In the nineteenth century miners in local areas organized mining districts to manage mining operations and keep records of claims. Almost all records in Bradshaw Mining Record Book B are notices of location for mining claims within the district. Each notice identifies a claim by a unique name and provides a description which includes dimensions and location. Location notices also provide the names of claims holders and dates of discovery and recording.

ARRANGEMENT: Location notices in the Bradshaw Mining District record book are chronological by date recorded.

RELATED RECORDS: The Beaver County recorder's NOTICES OF LOCATION BOOKS, series 23992, also contain location notices for claims in the Bradshaw District. A copy of by-laws as filed with the General Land Office can be found in MINING DISTRICT BY-LAWS, series 3651.

FINDING AIDS: Bradshaw Mining District Book B includes an index at the beginning which provides reference by claim name.

PROCESSING NOTE: Bradshaw Mining District Book B was microfilmed in January 2002 as part of Utah State Archives Millennial Project and processed by Rosemary Cundiff in February 2003.
