DESCRIPTION: The Iron County recorder kept a set of miscellaneous record books in which he or she recorded a variety of documents. He or she began the first miscellaneous record book with court decrees and other documents relating to the proceedings of 5th District Court (Iron County), but thereafter recorded numerous mining records. Primarily these include notices of location and documents showing proof of annual labor, but they also include other documents such as mineral certificates and forfeiture notices. The county recorder later recorded location notices elsewhere, but continued to record proof of labor and notices of intent to hold a claim in the miscellaneous record books. He or she also used these books to record documents validating individual qualifications, such as medical and dental licenses, bishop's certificates and the official bonds of local office holders. The recorder recorded documents relating to debts or delinquent taxes, such as redemption certificates, tax sale and sheriff's sale certificates, and lien waivers. He or she recorded a few articles of incorporation and city ordinances, as well as many personal documents such as powers of attorney, affidavits of identity, affidavits of citizenship, and death certificates. Early books include declarations of homestead. Book six contains easements for the installation of telephone lines. The last three books (recorded after 1950) are almost exclusively mining records.
ARRANGEMENT: The documents in the miscellaneous record books are generally arranged chronologically according to the date filed.
RELATED RECORDS: The Iron County recorder's miscellaneous record books are related to many other records in the recorder's office. In particular, they are related to additional mining records, which have been recorded in MINING DEEDS, series 23951, MINING NOTICES OF LOCATION, series 6144, and MINING NOTICES OF LOCATION (PLACER CLAIMS), series 23952. FINDING AIDS: An index at the end of Miscellaneous Record Book 1 alphabetically identifies individuals referenced in the documents and identifies the page on which documents were recorded. Indexes at the beginning of Miscellaneous Record Books 3-9 alphabetically list both individuals and document types. Miscellaneous Record Book 2 is not indexed.
PROCESSING NOTE: Iron County miscellaneous record books were microfilmed by Utah State Archives in June 1974 and processed by Rosemary Cundiff in November 2001.

GAPS: Iron County miscellaneous record books contain no documents recorded between September 1956 and September 1960.
