IRON COUNTY (UTAH). COUNTY RECORDER [537 ]

STATELINE MINING DISTRICT RECORDS TRANSCRIPT, 1896-1897.
1 microfilm reel

A separate agency history is available.

DESCRIPTION: In 1896 the Stateline Mining District was organized in Stateline Canyon in northwestern Iron County where deposits of gold and silver ore had been discovered. In accordance with federal law, (see Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. XVII, chap. 152), mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration, and locators of the same had exclusive right of possession. Local mining districts managed mining operations and recorded claims. Only one year after the organization of the Stateline District, the Utah Legislature enacted a mining law which transferred responsibility for recording mining claims from the mining district recorder to the county recorder (Laws of Utah, 1897, chapter 36, "Mining Claims"). The Iron County recorder made a transcript of all records kept by the Stateline District for the one year of its existence which preceded the law change. This transcript consists primarily of notices of location, but also includes a power of attorney and a few mining deeds. Each location notice includes the names of locators, the name of the mining claim, a description of the claim, and indicates when and where the claim was originally recorded in the record book of the Stateline Mining District.

ARRANGEMENT: Notices of location, a special power of attorney and mining deeds are separated according to type of document, and thereunder are arranged chronologically.

RELATED RECORDS: Mining records for this area were subsequently recorded by the Iron County recorder in MINING LOCATION NOTICES, series 6144 and MINING DEEDS, series 23951. By-laws for the Stateline Mining District were recorded in Book C of MINING LOCATION NOTICES, series 6144, page 74.

FINDING AIDS: A chronological list of documents appears at the beginning of the book. Documents are identified by claim or lode name.

PROCESSING NOTE: The Iron County recorder's transcript of claims in the Stateline Mining District was microfilmed by Utah State Archives in October 1974 and processed by Rosemary Cundiff in November 2001.
