SILVER BELT MINING DISTRICT (UTAH). RECORDER [3121]

MINING LOCATION NOTICES, 1872-1875.
1 microfilm reel

A separate agency history is available.

DESCRIPTION: The Silver Belt Mining District was organized in 1872 in the area northwest of Cedar City. In accordance with established practice, which Congress enacted into law that year (see Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. XVII, chap. 152), mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration, and locators of the same had exclusive right of possession. Local mining districts managed mining operations and recorded claims. The Silver Belt Iron Mining District record book begins with a copy of the district by-laws and then includes notices of location for mining claims in the district. For each notice the district recorder reported the names of locators, the name of the mining claim, a description of the claim, and dates of location and recording.

ARRANGEMENT: The mining district recorder arranged notices of location chronologically.

RESEARCH NOTE: The mining district recorder's ink has faded, so many documents in this book are difficult or impossible to read. The book was later bound with Book B of the Pinto Iron Mining District, so all entries after page 115 relate to that district.

RELATED RECORDS: Additional location notices and other records for the Silver Belt Mining District were recorded by the Iron County recorder in MINING LOCATION NOTICES, series 6144. Record Book B of the Pinto Iron Mining District, which is located immediately to the south, is included herein, but is also included in Pinto Iron Mining District, MINING LOCATION NOTICES, series 23961.

FINDING AIDS: An index at the beginning of the book lists claim names and identifies page numbers on which they were recorded.

PROCESSING NOTE: The Silver Belt Mining District record book was microfilmed by Utah State Archives in October 1974 and processed by Rosemary Cundiff in November 2001.

PREFERRED CITATION: Cite the Utah State Archives and Records Service, the creating agency name, the series title, and the series number.
