TUTSAGUBET MINING DISTRICT (UTAH). RECORDER [3101]

MINING RECORDS, 1883-1885.
1 microfilm reel

A separate agency history is available.

DESCRIPTION: Federal mining law enacted in 1872 declared that all valuable mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration and purchase and that the locators of the same were to have exclusive right of possession as long as they complied with the laws of the United States and of the local mining district. The law authorized the democratic organization of local mining districts and charged them to record mining claims and manage mining operations in accordance with Federal law and local needs and customs (Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. XVII, chap. 152. Published by authority of Congress, Boston: Brown, Little and Company). Tutsagubet Mining District Book A contains the minutes of a meeting organizing the Tutsagubet Mining District and the by-laws adopted for the same. It contains the mining claims or notices of location recorded by the mining district recorder for the first two years. Each notice of location records the names of locators, the name of the mining claim, a legal description of the location, and the authorizing signature of the mining district recorder.

ARRANGEMENT: The mining district recorder arranged claims chronologically as they were recorded.

RELATED RECORDS: The Washington County recorder also recorded the by-laws of the Tutsagubet Mining District in DEEDS (PINE VALLEY), series 23264 (Deed Record Book N, p 210-213). Additional notices of location and duplicates of the ones in Book A, as well as mining claims and other records filed after 1885 were kept in DEEDS (PINE VALLEY), series 23264. After about 1891 these records were filed in MINING DEEDS, series 23669; MINING NOTICES OF LOCATION, series 81372; MINING PROOF OF LABOR, series 23671. Abstracts for claims in this district are in ABSTRACTS (MINES), series 23670.

PROCESSING NOTE: The Tutsagubet Mining District record book was microfilmed in August 1982 by Utah State Archives and processed by Rosemary Cundiff in May 2001.
