DESCRIPTION: This series contains alien enemy registration forms assembled by the Davis County Sheriff during World War II. The forms document individuals and families of Japanese descent living in Davis County from 1940-1945. The forms include the following types of information: household head's name and address, landlord or employer's name and address, family members' names, birth dates, birth places and registration numbers, as well as the number and types of firearms and ammunition belonging to each individual or family. A number of composite listings are also included in the series, detailing many of the same individuals and types of information as the registration forms.

The United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) launched the Alien Registration Program in July 1940 in response to distant threats of war. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States' subsequent involvement in World War II, aliens from enemy countries were required by a January 14, 1942 Presidential Proclamation (No. 2537) to apply for a second registration. This program was carried out by the Department of Justice's Enemy Alien Unit, rather than the INS. The Department of Justice enlisted the help of local police authorities in this second registration. The registration forms and composite listings contained in this series are a likely product of this second registration program.

ARRANGEMENT: This series is arranged by document type--registration forms followed by mostly undated composite lists of registrants. Thereunder, registration forms are arranged alphabetically by the household head's surname.
