Series 22091

LUCIN MINING DISTRICT (UTAH). RECORDER [2731]

MINING NOTICES FILINGS, 1885-1896
1 microfilm reel

A separate agency history is available.

DESCRIPTION: This series contains a listing of notices of locations filed with the district recorder with information pertaining to the name of the claim and the date filed. Also included is a diary of an unknown individual from April to June of an unknown year, containing notes from travels possibly in Nevada or Idaho. Mining records, which constitute a legal record, are kept for the purpose of monitoring and registering mining claims and operations. The Lucin Mining District Recorder recorded mining operations in Box Elder County, Utah and Elko County, Nevada.

Until the law changed in 1897, mining districts in Utah had the option of electing their own mining district recorder. Many of the larger mining districts within Utah, including Lucin Mining District, chose to elect their own recorders while claims and other records within smaller mining districts or in unorganized areas were filed with the county recorder. Although the Lucin Mining District elected its own recorder, mining operations within the mining district were also recorded with the county recorder during this time. The district recorder was created in 1869 and ended in 1897 when the law changed and the county recorder assumed sole responsibility for mining records (Laws of Utah, 1897, Chapter 36).

ARRANGEMENT: These records are arranged chronologically by the date they were filed.

RELATED RECORDS: Series 18126, MINING RECORDS 1869-1896, contains mining records for the same mining district. Series 84097, MINING RECORDS, 1873-1985, contains mining records for the same mining district kept by the Box Elder County Recorder.

PROCESSING NOTE: Mining records were first scheduled as permanent records in 1971. The mining records were filmed by the Box Elder County Microfilm Department. The entire series was archivally processed by David Clark in August 1999.
