Series 17586
GOVERNOR (1965-1977 : RAMPTON) [446]LEGISLATIVE BILL FILES, 1963-1976.7.25 cu. ft. and 12 reels of microfilm
A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: This series contains copies of House and Senate bills and resolutions as well as drafts, notes, and related correspondence from Governor Rampton's office. The Governor received copies of legislative bills in order to determine what his action on a bill would be. He also relayed copies of many of the bills to the Attorney General for an opinion on the constitutionality of the bill. Most of the correspondence is generated by the legislature, state agencies, the Attorney General's office, and the Governor's office; some constituent correspondence regarding certain bills is included in this series
ARRANGEMENT: This series is arranged chronologically by year of legislative session, thereunder alphanumerically by type of bill (House Bill, House Resolution, Senate Bill, etc.) and number. Any related materials for that particular legislative session follows.
RESEARCH NOTE: For 1966 materials, the bills for the 1966 1st special session are filed first, followed by the bills from the 1966 2nd special session, followed by 1966 correspondence that relates not to a legislative session in 1966, but rather to the Little Hoover Commission's recommendations contained in 1965 S.B. 20.
Descriptions that list more than one bill for a folder indicate that more than one bill was mentioned in the correspondence or other materials. Researchers should scan the descriptions for an entire legislative session to ensure that all mentions of a particular bill have been detected. Due to the large number of unnumbered bills, each bill has received its own folder; the exception to this rule is with the 1969 legislative bills where, in the interest of efficiency, numbered bills have been grouped together within single folders.
Any undated or otherwise unidentifiable legislative items have been retained together, and may be found at the end of this series.
RELATED RECORDS: Bills passed by the legislature and signed by the governor appear in Series 4076, LEGISLATIVE BILLS. Senate and House WORKING BILLS, showing actions taken in the legislature, are found in Series 428 and Series 432. Researchers may also wish to consult holdings for the Little Hoover Commission (Commission on the Reorganization of the Executive Branch). More information regarding the Little Hoover Commission may be found in STATE AGENCY CORRESPONDENCE, Series 14250.
PROCESSING NOTE: This series was microfilmed in September 2003 and the hard copy will be kept because of the intrinsic value of the papers. It was processed by Kira Robertson in February 2001.
PREFERRED CITATION: Cite the Utah State Archives and Records Service, the creating agency name, the series title, and the series number.
