Series 17494
CEDAR COUNTY (UTAH). RECORDER [2653]DEEDS, 1857-1862.3 reels microfilm and 0.2 cu. ft.
A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: Deed entries in these volumes record the sale or transfer of property. By law, conveyances were not validated until entered by the county recorder. Two brands from 1859 are also recorded in the second volume following the deeds.
The second half of the first volume contains the MINUTES of the County Court (series 17489); the second half of the second volume contains the MINUTES of the Probate Court (series 17493).
Entries in the first volume are primarily consecration deeds with an individual giving all property to Brigham Young, Trustee for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in consideration of the good will the donor has toward the LDS church. Other entries in the volume and in the second volume record land sales and mortgages which follow a similar pattern in the entry. The entry records the property description, names of the persons selling and buying, the amount, and signatures. There is a signed statement by the probate judge authorizing the transaction followed by the recorder's statement, signature, and date recorded. Two brands are registered as well at the end of the second volume.
The series ends with the dissolution of the county by the territorial legislature in January 1862.
ARRANGEMENT: Entries are chronological by date recorded.
RELATED RECORDS: The second half of the first volume is part of series 17489, Cedar County Court MINUTES. The second half of the second volume is part of series 17494, Cedar County Probate Court MINUTES.
CUSTODY HISTORY: These records were transferred to Utah County when Cedar County was dissolved. They were transferred to the State Archives by Utah County in March 2003.
PROCESSING NOTE: These volumes were microfilmed in 1958 by the Utah County Clerk's office. The series was processed by A.C. Cone in February 1996. The second reel was cut to remove CEDAR COUNTY PROBATE COURT MINUTES belonging to series 14793 and to remove the typed transcript for that while retaining the typed transcript for this series on a separate reel. The hard copy was transferred to the Archives in March 2003 by Utah County and this inventory updated. Since deeds were recorded in the minute books, hard copy should be sought under those series.
