A separate agency history is available.
DESCRIPTION: This minute book records the actions of the county probate court in civil, criminal, and probate matters. The volume includes procedures for the court, financial claims presented for court business, and juror lists. Proceedings covered include probate cases for estates and guardianship; civil cases such as debt collection and divorce; chancery cases such as foreclosures and attachments; and criminal cases such as horse theft. Grand jury indictments are discussed. The probate judge solemnizes some marriages which are recorded in the minutes. Occasional grants of herd grounds and timber rights, more commonly present in the COUNTY COURT MINUTES, are also recorded.
Cedar County was dissolved by the legislature in January 1862 with its territory divided between Tooele and Utah counties. The Probate Judge signed a statement swearing that the foregoing minutes were an accurate record of the county on 25 January 1862.
ARRANGEMENT: The minutes are arranged chronologically by date of meeting.
RELATED RECORDS: Some applications for herd grounds were also made to the Cedar County Court and appear in its MINUTES, series 17489.
The DEEDS which appear at the beginning of the volume are part of series 17494.
PROCESSING NOTE: This volume was microfilmed in 1958 by the Utah County Clerk's office. The series was processed by A.C. Cone in February 1996. The reel was cut to remove DEEDS belonging to series 14794 and to remove the transcripts for both series from the end to place in proper order. Hard copy was transferred to the State Archives by Utah County in March 2003 and this inventory updated.
GAPS: Cedar County was created in 1856, but it is unknown if Probate Court Minutes existed prior to 1859
