STATEHOOD CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION (1895) [170]

DESCRIPTION: Acting on the authority of a federal enabling law enacted in 1894, delegates formed a convention in 1895 to draw up a state constitution. These dockets track the movement of papers related to the convention.

The first two dockets log propositions and petitions. Propositions were statements, worded appropriately for inclusion as a section in a constitutional article, introduced by one of the members of the convention. Petitions were sent by outside individuals or groups with a particular interest. The dockets note the file number, date, who introduced the matter, title, number of readings, committee referrals, and final filing.

The third docket logs similar information on the introduction, readings, and referrals of of committee reports, which were copies of proposed articles in the constitution. The final docket on routine matters logs referrals and adoptions of motions pertaining to the business workings of the convention such as expenses, seating members, etc.

ARRANGEMENT: Arrangement is by document type, thereunder chronological by day of the convention.

RELATED RECORDS: Copies of the propositions, petitions, and reports which these dockets note, appear in series 3212, the Statehood Constitutional Convention's RECORDS.

PROCESSING NOTE: Records of the convention were turned over to the Secretary of State. In turn these were transferred to the archives by 1957. Processed by A.C. Cone, 15 October 1993 and microfilmed in 1994.
